Sony Case Study

OSSI helps Sony Keep Music Alive

The Challenge: Preserve the Music of the Past

When Sony Music purchased CBS Records, it inherited 100 years of musical heritage. With recordings stored on everything from wax, to metal, to glass, Sony set out to digitize all of its more than 500,000 recordings.

A RAID subsystem would be a vital component of Sony's new "digital library". It would need speed for sustained transfer rates, as huge audio files would be moving on and off the tape all day long. The RAID would also need to be highly reliable and fault-tolerant, ensuring maximum uptime and reducing the risk of data loss.

The Solution: Look to the Future

OSSI's forward-thinking RAID disk subsystem is SAN-capable, so Sony can cost-effectively migrate to a SAN system in the future. As well, OSSI's RAID would scale with Sony as its music archive invariably grew.

An OSSI field engineer worked on-site at Sony's Manhattan studio to install a Metastor FibreChannel RAID disk array. While on-site, OSSI technicians also helped train Sony's technical team to maintain the RAID.

Results: Public Service Becomes a Competitive Advantage

Not only did OSSI's storage system help Sony save music for the ages, it perfectly positioned them for the age of the MP3. With such a vast archive of digital music, Sony can easily take advantage of paid download revenue opportunities.
